As the new millenium approaches and the gates close on the present, so come remnants of the century that proceeded it. Innuendoes of "the end" are vociferated from harbingers around the world. In the year 999 AD times were lived as if the "Laws of Moses" or the "Gospel of Jesus" never existed. Widespread in Europe, impulse was a way of life. It seemed as no one was above fighting, prostitution, looting, rape and robbery. Taverns, halls and homes alike were the gathering places for massive orgy and sexual misbehavior of all sorts, including incest and bestiality. Even rival Popes blinded, castrated, and mutilated each other with no remorse or spiritual ethics. War and disease plagued countries, resulting in widespread cannibalism. People of towns and villages were raped, pillaged, tortured and devoured. In the book "AD 1000": Living On The Brink Of Apocalypse" by Richard Erdous, such incidents are documented. In the book it talks of a man hiding in a church and when unsuspecting worshippers came to pray, he would kill and make a meal of them. Surprised one day by a couple he was found in the church surrounded by 48 severed heads knawing on the 49th. The couple managed to escape to tell of his horrific feast, the man was eventually caught and put to death. Richard Erdous goes on with other gruesome accounts, such as bodies being dug up and roasted in the place though of at the time as being the "heart of the civilized world". It was these things that made some believe that the almighty was going to release the wrath that would end the world. Well the world didn't end proven by our mere existence, and all was somehow swept under an historical rug - an age too dark to end up in history books. Bone chilling even by the likes of Steven King, the modern day master of horror.
Now, in the present day, just as Chicken Little thought the sky was falling, people wait for cascade signs of Armageddon. Some use the geology, the weather and the ideologies of global warming Or "El Nino" as a sure sign. Others may be more technical, and say the Y2K or year 2000 computer glitch will turn off the world and take use back to the dark ages, giving a Snake Pliskin, "Escape From LA" feel. Others still may be more political, and say that between the democrats, republicans, liberals and who ever else wants to get into this contest of who can pull the other persons pants down while keeping your own up, sink to the level of so much mud-slinging that nobody trusts anybody as the end of humanity. How about the economic side, the stock market, so unstable and the rumor of the crash of all crashes that is inevitably coming, remnant of Redd Foxx yelling, "this is the big one" as the end. Check the demographics, the population explosion, which, some say may be what causes the planet to self- destruct by the year 2000 was documented in a book "Behold a Pale Horse by William Cooper. There is a epidemic of disease with AIDS at the top of the list which many believe, if projections are correct, by Y2K will have infected more than one fourth of the total population of the earth and beat out cancer as the number one incurable disease as God's way of throwing in the towel. The many different religions, each claiming to have the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help them God, while trying to cut the head off of someone else's' Savoir like a scene from the movie Highlander, each battling profusely only to pant the mystical phrase "there can be only one". The American Indians have a folk tale that is passed down to each generation of a white Buffalo being born (which has come to pass). They believe that it is a sign of the beginning of the end or "The Great Reckoning", the fury of Mother Earth in the very near future.
All across the globe, in every country there is anticipation and aggravation. Disassembled and macerated nations, built and ruled verboten by its communistic leaders, such as East Germany and the USSR no longer exist. Then there is India, once known mostly for its non-violent movement that inspired Dr. Martian Luther King lead by Nobel Peace Prize winner Mahatma Gandhi is now pro-nuclear.
In America, we are now known as the "heart of civilization" and the leader of mass communication, Armed Forces and technology. Most of the signs gathered here derive from aspirations of infotainment have become credence over the years. Spreaded though various religions and political viewpoints, which in a lot of cases have proved to be down right virulent for the well being of humanity. According to the scriptures, the rainbow is a reminder that God will not destroy this world by flood again, but with all the "tales of the end" afloat at the very eve of another millenium, he sure is keeping his options open! Living on impulse, has somewhat crawled from under that historical rug once again to run rampant on society. The tidal wave of violence, rape, incest, modern day slavery, hatred, disease, racism, illiteracy and yes, in some cases cannibalism has once again nearly consumed us worldwide.
Has the laws of Moses the teachings of Jesus and the revelations of the prophet Mohammed (peace and blessing be upon them all) Simply dissipated from our way of life? And who is to suffer? Our children, our children's children and the descendents there of. And if so instead of forecasting soul-searching end every 999 years, let this be the Genesis of the millenium for love peace education and unity to sustain forever. If we don't believe God's a forgiving and merciful God … then we are already doomed.
